Culture

The cultural significance of Shelley Point.

In centuries past, the calm waters of Shelley Bay offered the perfect location for explorers to come ashore our otherwise rugged coastline. Vasco Da Gama was the first of these explorers to set foot on the South African coast at Shelley Point, opening the passage of trade to the East. To celebrate his discoveries, the Shelley Point developers have erected a Vasco Da Gama museum. We believe this separates the Shelley Point Development from others, and adds to the unique charm and character of the development.

In addition to the museum, a statue of Vasco Da Gama can be found in the centre of this peninsula. Another statue is located at the actual spot he came ashore.

Keeping that West Coast charm

Shelley Point aims to retain a serene white-washed West Coast character. To ensure that the Shelley Point Peninsula remains unspoilt, an environmentally friendly approach was applied to the underground installation of all services, such as electricity and telephone cables.

Our concern for Shelley Bay's natural beauty, and other general aesthetic considerations, have shaped the following site features:

  • The preservation of 400 fully grown palm trees (70 years old, weighing up to 25 tons)
  • Boardwalk access to beaches to protect sensitive ecology
  • Underground electricity and telephone lines
  • Fountains built by Belgium craftsmen
  • Planned small boat harbour (At a site rated the best South African location for a small boat harbour by CSIR)
